The Outer Banks of North Carolina is truly a relaxing beach vacation spot . There are no boardwalks that commercialize the beautiful beach landscape. If you stay oceanfront (3 of our cottages are oceanfront), you can simply walk out and claim your spot in the sand. If you stay oceanside (2 of our cottages are oceanside), you only have a few minutes' walk to the nearest beach access and you are on your way to a relaxing day at the beach. The mainland (Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head) is bustling during the summer season so you will have non-stop shopping, exploring, nightlife, and restaurants galore.
As far as history goes, there is plenty of sites to visit. You have the Wright Brothers' Memorial, multiple lighthouses, and The Lost Colony (a must see) which is the longest running outdoor play in the country where you can witness a reenactment of the 1587 English settlement in the New World.
If you are interested in a bit more of a secluded feel for your vacation, then just keep driving and land in Hatteras Island. The feel of Hatteras is truly unique. Driving the 13 miles by the National Wildlife Refuge before you land in the first town in Hatteras you will feel the difference.
